HEX Utility Knife

Branding/Packaging

Project Description

With this project, I was tasked with creating the name, branding,
and packaging for an everyday object. The utility knife was a fun
challenge because I was able to think about how I could make the
packaging more than what the knife comes with when you buy it at
the store. Some challenges I ran into were how should I store extra
blades, and how can I print the packaging onto a standard letter print.

I solved the first challenge by making the packaging into a reusable
stand with a strap to hold it in during transit. The solution for storing
extra blades was not my favorite, but I decided to store them inside a
door on the back side of the stand The name of the brand and the logo
were inspired by the shape made when placing two blades together: a
hexagon. The box features half-inch increments along the opening for
the knife, a right angle on one side, and a grid with one-inch squares.

This is one of my favorite projects because it felt like I really got to see it
through and make something that could in theory be seen on store shelves.
I enjoyed it because I was able to make the packaging fit the brand I had
created and I had to work around real life constraints.
